Resume Do's and Dont's

 

Do not give the employer a reason to put your resume into the “NO” pile. If you follow this guide as a checklist for each of your resumes, you will significantly increase your opportunities to land yourself a dream career!

• Make it one page. Other then executives, 1 page if preferred but 2 pages are acceptable if you have over 20 years of experience.

• Spellcheck. Grammar, Get help in areas where you are weak like grammar.  You must not have any misspelled words or bad grammar.

• Use a legible type font, consistent margins and a typeface that isn’t too small.

• References are not necessary, bring references document into the interview instead

• Avoid “I” at all times. Example: Instead of “I was responsible for supervising a staff of 10 employees”. Write “Managed 10 employees”.

• Keep religion, politics, or hobbies out – unless they directly relate to the job.

• Statistics and measured volumes of success are what employers are looking for. They want to know what return on investment you brought the previous employer.

• It is ok to leave some details out of your resume. These experience details are great talking points to have when you get the interview!

• Students, remember the best way to create a powerful resume is by having as much internships as possible. Real world experience can be the deciding point to any employer.

 

Objective Statement:

• No longer a necessary component in 2012.

• If you choose to have an Objective, make it very specific to the job you are applying for.

• Make the Objective Statement focused on the company goals, not about your goals.

• Look at the job description and your personal strengths and relate them into your statement.  

 

Education:

• Listing your GPA is not necessary, only list if it is 3.6 GPA or above.

• If you have a college degree, do not list your high school degree.

• If you have multiple college diplomas, list them from most recent to least recent.

• Students still attending college, say “Anticipated Graduation, July 2012”.

 

Experience:

• List experience from most recent to least recent.

• Each description detail should be a reason why you are most qualified for the job position. Example: XYZ Company is looking for someone creative, leadership skills, self-reliant, and able to work well with others. In your resume, make sure you aim all of descriptions at XYZ Companies needs.

• Students looking for an internship. Do not be worried if your lacking experience in the field you wish to be in. • If you are lacking job experience, list charity work or activities and describe the leadership rolls or other key positions you completed.

• If you have lots of experience, only list the job experience pertaining to the position or that examine skills the company is looking for.

 

Visual Appeal:

• Make sure your resume is very legible, most employers will throw away hard to read resumes.

• Keep your font style simple. Examples: Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica, and Garamond.

• Design students, keep your resume simple and do not try to show you’re creatively on the resume. It is simply not the place. Instead, make a creative handout or leave behind with your resume.

• Resume should be on white or cream paper. No bright colors or clear papers; in this case, standing out is a bad idea.

• Use standard 8.5×11 paper only. Smaller or larger scale will not help you gain the interview. Smaller paper can be lost and forgot about in filing, larger scale is not easy to scan or file. Maybe the employer wishes to fax your resume to the position department and they will not be able to.

• Use only black ink color.
